WASHINGTON — A veteran U.S. diplomat will spend the weekend in jail on charges he traded work visas for lavish dinners, New York City hotel rooms, jewelry and Las Vegas trips with exotic dancers.

Michael John O’Keefe, the deputy non-immigrant visa chief at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto, was indicted on bribery and conspiracy charges Friday. International jewelry executive Sunil Agrawal, a native of India, also was charged but remains at large.

Since the 2001 terrorist attacks, authorities have tightened controls over non-immigrant visas for students, tourists and workers. Friday’s indictment, however, describes a scheme in which O’Keefe fast-tracked applications for Agrawal’s company, STS Jewels of New York.

O’Keefe personally handled STS applications, going so far as to approve some that had been rejected. He awarded 21 visas to STS employees, the indictment says. (more…)

Most illegal immigrants to the United States come from Mexico but the greatest percentage increase in their ranks during 2000-2005 was from India, according to official estimates.

The number of unauthorised immigrants residing in the United States in January 2006 reached 11 million compared to 8.5 million in January 2000, according to calculations by the Office of Immigration Statistics in the Department of Homeland Security.

Among the 10 leading source countries for the unauthorised immigration during 2000 to 2005, Mexico topped the list with nearly 6 million residents in January 2005 up from 4.7 million in 2000 with the greatest annual average increase of 260,000. (more…)

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Homeland Security has proposed having to require United States permanent residents to get fingerprinted on each occasion that they re-enter the country. Some Canadian visitors could also be included. The security checks would take place at port of entries such as international airports, land borders, seaports, and would be an expansion of the US-Visit Program. Under the US-Visit Program most foreign visitors must have biographic and biometric information recorded when entering the United States or when obtaining visas at posts abroad. .

The U.S. government is then able to verify the identity of the foreign visitor. During this process officials are also able to check for criminal records, terrorist suspects and the validity of the visa. As of January 2004, 61 million foreign visitors have had a digital photograph taken along with being fingerprinted. (more…)

If you are a foreigner and got married to a United States citizen, you will be eligible for a green card. But to get a permanent visa, it will take 12-15 months and subject to the annual quota in providing green card to the immigrants. During the processing time, you can stay in the US if you have a student visa or a working visa.

The US also offers K-1 visa to the fiancee of a citizen. The application for visa is filed on a USCIS form I-129F by the sponsor or the citizen on behalf of the fiancee, who will then be interviewed at a US embassy or consulate in his/her native country. If the visa is granted, the fiancee has to marry the US citizen sponsor within 90 days of his/her entry to the country. The fiancee can also apply for visas for children to enter at the same time. An undocumented immigrant arrested by Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies said he illegally crossed the border four times in 10 days.

Aurelio Solorzano-Ovando, 35, told officials that three of those crossings resulted in arrests by Border Patrol agents, who released him in Mexico. Deputies arrested Solorzano-Ovando and 11 other undocumented immigrants Thursday in the far-west Valley on suspicion of conspiring to smuggle themselves into the country.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Solorzano-Ovando ‘personifies the problem’ with the federal government and its ‘revolving door’ policy. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials could not be reached to verify Solorzano-Ovando’s claim, but a Border Patrol official said it’s possible. According to Tucson Sector spokesman Gustavo Soto, an illegal crossing suspect is escorted back to Mexico if he or she has no significant criminal or immigration history. (more…)

LOS ANGELES, CA - One of the main responsibilities of a U.S. Border Patrol agent is to deter as many illegal immigrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. However, not all Border Patrol agents uphold this responsibility. Last month, Oscar Antonio Ortiz, a former U.S. Border Patrol agent was given a 5 year sentence for smuggling at least 100 illegal immigrants into the United States. He had the assistance of Eric Balderas who was another Border Patrol agent.

The agents earned about $300 for each illegal immigrant they aided. In 2001 Ortiz used a false birth certificate to get a job as a Border Patrol agent. Shortly before getting hired, Ortiz was detained on suspicion of attempting to smuggle two illegal immigrants into the country. Border Patrol officials claim they did not have this knowledge back then. (more…)
