bipartisan-deal-on-immigration-is-near.jpg
Republicans and Democrats were nearing a deal Tuesday on a sweeping immigration overhaul that would give millions of illegal immigrants a chance at legal status but strictly limit future arrivals from staying in the U.S.

Senators and White House officials negotiating through the afternoon and into the evening said an elusive compromise was in sight. With details changing rapidly, it was unclear whether the talks would result in a breakthrough or a meltdown.

“Eighty-twenty!” said an upbeat Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., one of the key players in the talks, giving strong odds of a deal he said could be announced as early as Wednesday..

In a hopeful sign for a potential deal, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., postponed until Monday a vote that had been scheduled for Wednesday on bringing up an immigration measure that passed the Senate last year. (more…)

commentary-fear-of-foreigners-drives-immigration-debate.jpg
This week marks the first anniversary of a series of major demonstrations over immigration reform. And while an entire year has gone by, Americans really haven’t learned that much about the subject matter.

For instance, some immigration restrictionists are still playing pretend. They are still insisting that the only thing that people are concerned about is illegal immigration and that, with regard to legal immigration, America is as welcoming as ever.

What? Maybe that’s true … if we agree that — despite the brochure — America has never really welcomed immigrants, even the legal kind.

Those who insist otherwise point out that the United States takes in about 2 million legal immigrants annually. (more…)

no-agreement-yet-in-sight-on-immigration.jpg
The Senate launches a major debate on immigration this week, with shaky prospects for a comprehensive overhaul that large numbers of Democrats and Republicans can support.

One of the biggest sticking points is how the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already living here would be treated. Republican senators are insisting on tougher rules than in last year’s Senate bill for illegal immigrants to achieve legal status — longer waits, bigger fines and a trip home to the country of origin.

But a new issue has emerged that is equally contentious. The Bush administration has proposed managing the future flow of legal immigration by stressing job skills and education over family ties. Immigrant groups worry that will sharply curtail the ability to bring in close relatives. (more…)

mexico-hosts-conference-on-immigration-issues.jpg
Many of the Mexicans who leave their homeland for the United States come from the state of Michoacan. This week, hundreds of people with an interest in immigration issues — from representatives of migrant organizations to academics and politicians — gathered there for a conference on the issue. They came from all over Latin America, the U.S. and many parts of Europe and Africa.

Workshops and panels tackled issues such as the social cost of migration, migrant rights and how to make hometown associations work (more…)

    immigration-reform.jpg
When he announced his campaign for the U.S. Congress, Georgia state Sen. Jim Whitehead said he was running for the seat left vacant by the February death of Republican Rep. Charlie Norwood. But Mr. Whitehead sounds as though he’s running to replace Sen. Joseph McCarthy, the notorious Wisconsin Republican whose commie-baiting smear tactics ruined lives and finally shamed his colleagues.

Mr. Whitehead has aimed his demagoguery squarely at illegal immigrants in a campaign designed to whip up the worst instincts and impulses of his constituents. No lie is too shameful to be left unspoken.

Proclaiming “immigration is the No. 1 issue” in the 10th Congressional District, Mr. Whitehead contends that “left-wing political activists [are] intentionally registering illegal aliens to vote, including known al-Qaida terrorists,” according to Georgia political writer Tom Crawford. Senate Democratic leaders, increasingly unhappy with an immigration overhaul taking shape in bipartisan talks with the White House, are considering moving their own, more permissive bill.

The move would essentially pull the rug out from under a delicate round of talks between Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., top Bush administration officials and senior Republicans, who have been negotiating for weeks to strike a deal on the contentious and politically sensitive issue.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who has set May 14 as a target date for the immigration debate, said Thursday he plans to bring up a measure drafted last year – backed by most Democrats but only a few Republicans – if the talks don’t yield a bipartisan deal. (more…)

After another, smaller round of protest marches, immigration rights advocates were left yesterday asking the same question they posed last year: What comes next in the quest for reform?
Turnout nationwide at Tuesday’s rallies was light compared with last year’s more than 1 million people. The smaller crowds raised doubts about the future of the movement and its ability to seek changes.

“Last year, it was easy,” said Isabel Garcia, a key organizer of the May 1st Coalition in Tucson, Ariz. “Everybody was gathering. The politicians, the radio stations across the country were promoting this march for what was called comprehensive immigration reform. That phrase has been watered down and lost.” (more…)
