Some employers look for immigrants to hire. Their logic in this thinking is that these workers will work more cheaply then American citizens. Hiring these non citizens can be a tricky though. Then you have those who hire immigrants to do dangerous work that does not provide adequate protection or training.

One of the bigger problems though is that a lot of companies have a tendency to overwork immigrant employees, in particular the ones who do not speak English very well. In actuality though, employers must treat immigrants the same way they would treat an American worker.

The Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act was enacted to protect migrant farm workers. Some labor contractors and employees are exempt under limited circumstances. As an employee you are entitled to receive the terms and conditions of the jobs in their own language. (more…)

common-green-card-questions.jpg
So you want to get a green card? One million foreign nationals become legal immigrants to the United State each year. Here are answers to commonly asked questions about U.S. residency procedures to qualify for a green card:

Q: Who is eligible to immigrate to the United States?

A: Anyone who is an immediate relative of a U.S. citizen or resident, employee sponsored by a U.S. company, approved refugee or winner of an annual green card lottery. People can apply at the nearest U.S. consulate.

On July 2, the State Department suspended the processing of business visas until Oct.1. See details on the State Department’s visa services website: http://travel.state.gov/visa/ visa_1750.html

Q: Do I have to be outside the United States to apply for an immigrant visa?

A: No. People living or temporarily in the United States who qualify for asylum, employment, family and lottery can apply for a green card, which is the same as an immigrant visa. Applications within the United States are submitted to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. See details on the USCIS website: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis (more…)

The MAST International program through the University of Minnesota isn’t a foriegn concept in Goodhue County.

Steve and Mary Matthees and Brandon Schafer are proof of that.

“This program is the longest run exchange program in the United States, and it started in 1949,” said David Pratt, University of Minnesota MAST International coordinator.

The program provides foreign students with practical and academic training in American agricultural and horticultural production. It not only gives each student hands-on training in their area of interest, but provides them with the opportunity to enroll in related courses for a semester.

“My experience with the program has been extremely positive,” said Brandon Schafer, Goodhue farmer who hosts MAST students. “The relationships I have built have been life-long.

The program provides Schafer and his family the opportunity to work in a multi-cultural environment right at home.

“The world is not as big as it used to be,” said Schafer. “It’s been an extraordinary experience for my kids because they can put a face with a country and most kids can’t do that.” (more…)

the-revolt-on-illegal-immigration.jpg
After the utter collapse in the Senate last week of a comprehensive immigration bill, Washington insiders are blaming everyone and everything.

Supposedly, talk-radio hysteria killed the bill. Or was it the purported racism of yokels? Or did most of us fail to appreciate the hidden benefits of open borders so clear only to those in Washington?

In reality, the bill failed because millions of Americans opposed it, believing, among other things, that it provided virtual amnesty to illegal aliens. Through the “Z visa,” the bill offered illegal aliens legal worker status — along with a ticket to eventual citizenship — after only a precursory background check.

immigration-bills-defeat.jpg
President Bush must have had an eerie feeling last week as he watched a large number of Senate Republicans help sabotage his immigration overhaul.

It was exactly a decade ago that he was sitting in the governor’s office in the Texas Capitol watching Senate Republicans torpedo his signature school-funding bill. Against the advice of many in his party, Mr. Bush had pushed the Legislature to overhaul the state’s way of paying for public education.

He told me then that the state needed to fix the system, which the Texas Supreme Court had ruled unconstitutional. If not, property tax rates would rise as high as California’s, and people would revolt. No telling what would happen to school funding then.

He was right. The issue needed solving before it got worse. And he had the fire to take it on.

At first, he had some luck. The Texas House passed a bill he supported, with more Democrats than Republicans signing on. But it hit trouble in the Senate, where some Republicans didn’t want to get within five miles of messing with Texas’ tax system, which a fix would have required. (more…)
