Moving can be a costly and stressful experience. The moving tips below can help you save money when hiring a moving company as well as make your move go more smoothly.

1.) Get rid of items that you no longer use and have been storing for a long period of time, especially if the items are bulky. Consider having a garage sale or donating these items. Often the cost of packing and moving these items is greater than their value. If you have furniture that is quite old and in poor condition, it may make more sense to apply the money you save by not moving these items towards the purchase of new furniture.

2.) Do a good job of packing. If you have a lot of items that are not packed or are improperly packed, this will significantly increase the amount of time it takes to complete your move as well as risk damage to you property.

3.) Your move will proceed much more quickly if you are organized. Have the path that the movers will use to load your property clear, including the hallways inside of your residence as well as stairways and sidewalks outside of your residence. Having your boxes stacked together roughly 4 ft high can also allow the movers to move more quickly. If you do this, you should place the heavier boxes on the bottom of the stack and place the boxes that are the same size on top of each other.

4.) Check your parking area to see if there is a good spot for the movers to park to load your property more quickly. If ramps are available in the parking area, consider a path where the movers do not have to roll the dollies over a curb. If possible reserve a spot by parking in it and then move your vehicle when the movers arrive. In an apartment complex, if the movers will park along the back of a row of cars, open up a spot so that the movers do not have to move your stuff though a tight space between cars. (more…)

What is a Visa?

A “Visa” is simply a stamp in a passport that gives the passport holder authorization to enter the United States. The INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) handles most matters involving visas. You may find an immigration lawyer to help you with your H1 visa or any other visa on this site.

What is the H1-B Visa?

The H1-B visa is also commonly called a “work visa” or “work permit.” This is the most common form of temporary work visa. It enables the foreign worker to enter the United States to work temporarily in a professional capacity.

H1B Employment opportunities in the state of Minnesota, which reflect the national trend, are abundant, so abundant that employers are seeking out the assistance of foreign workers to fill the gaps in the workplace. To locate an H1B job in the U.S. use the links at the right to draft and post your resume.

The government requires at least five agencies to certify a foreign employee for H1B work in the United States, often a long process in itself. But the government recently made this process even more arduous by reducing its funding to one key player in the certification process, the State Economic Security Department. This cut in funding has had a grave impact on this state’s, as well as this country’s, ability to recruit and retain foreign professionals for employment, especially those H1B professionals with technical experience and in the field of health care.

According to a study supported by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the number of new international students studying in the states increased by over 8% during the most recent school year. There are now close to 600,000 students from other countries studying in the U.S., and nearly all of the 3,000 plus institutions have an international student population. As a result, competition among these students is increasing.

The application process can be overwhelming to anyone that is applying to schools. International students face added difficulties and stress factors beyond that of their U.S. peers. They may come from an area where mail service is expensive, slow, and unreliable. Application fees may need to be paid in a form that is unavailable to them and their families in their home countries. Coming from a different educational system, international applicants also often have to independently navigate strange vocabulary and terms on applications, school websites, and other admissions materials.

Though the College Board is continuing to increase the offering of entrance exams such as the SAT and GRE all over the globe, for students outside of major cities, access to testing is also a large area that needs improvement. Compounding this issue is that international students have a hard time selecting and registering for appropriate tests and have limited access to preparation materials. (more…)

A green card is the Holy Grail for millions of people around the world. It will allow immigrants from countries from all over the world to permanently live and work in the United States of America. Understanding how to obtain a green card is the key to starting a new life in the US.

There are many ways to get a green card, and this article will examine some of the most popular ways to obtain one.

Marrying a US citizen

If you happen to marry a US citizen (and we will presume that you are in love with them!), then it is a fairly straightforward process to obtain a green card.

Firstly, your husband or wife will file a Petition for Alien Relative (form I-130). After that, the INS will investigate to ensure your situation is bona fide before giving you the OK. After that you can file the Application for Status as Permanent Resident (form I-485). Finally you will have a routine interview with an immigration office and, if all things are well, you should get your green card.

Having an employer sponsor you:

This is perhaps the most laborious method available when it comes to comprehending how to obtain a green card. Involves going through a three step process that can take up to 18 months, or even longer, to complete.

The first step in the process involves your potential employer petitioning for a labor certification. In a nutshell, this means proving that you are irreplaceable and are economically sound. This is the key part of the process application; if you pass this, it should be plain sailing.

Assuming you make it through the first step, the second step is simply filling out the I-140 form and submitting it with your labor certification to the INS. The final step is the adjustment of status, which will make you a permanent resident. Again, this involves filling out the relevant forms and being prepared to wait as they process. (more…)

Probably the most important question and possibly the hardest to answer is “is this the right thing to do”? This, of course, is the question only YOU can answer and it depends a lot on your family. If you’re single then there are your parents, siblings, and other close family and friends you may miss who have to be informed. If your married (or separated) with a family then it’s a totally different scenario. If your kids are old enough to understand then they have to be fully informed and you have to listen to them. Both partners need to be 100% committed to the idea – a half hearted attempt or negative attitude will make the transition even harder.

This is a deeply personal subject and we experienced it first hand. Before we had kids we had visited Canada and I wanted to go for it – my wife wasn’t sure and didn’t want to leave her parents. About 3 years later after another visit to a different part of the country everything changed, we had a son and the town that was visited was everything we had dreamed of to raise our kids. The lifestyle available was vastly superior to the way we were living and obtainable by ordinary people. My wife came back to the UK and announced that she was 100% behind a move and we set the ball rolling straight away – the rest they say is history!!!!

So, once you are all in agreement, then you are past the first step. The real “fun” starts here!! (more…)

What is a Permanent Resident Card?

A Permanent Resident Card, commonly known as a Green Card, is evidence of your status as a lawful permanent resident with a right to live and work permanently in the United States. It also is evidence of your registration in accordance with United States immigration laws. The Permanent Resident Card is also called Form I-551.

What Does the Law Say?

Section 264 of the Immigration and Nationality Act provides that, “Every alien in the United States shall be issued a certificate of alien registration or an alien registration receipt card in such form and manner and at such time as shall be prescribed under regulations.”

It also states, “Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him. Any alien who fails to comply with [these] provisions shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.” (more…)

The lure of riches in a foreign land, the potential of awesome new opportunities, dreams of what might be – all these sometimes entice people to immigrate to a different country. Being reunited with a loved one or just longing for adventure are also strong reasons for immigrating. Sometimes, rather than being drawn to a new country, one is pushed: religious persecution, starvation when the crops have failed, escaping unbearable family situations. Certainly wars, revolutions and political unrest have caused thousands to try to find a peaceful existence elsewhere. And decades ago, many were forced against their will to live in a new country as slaves or as prisoners.

For all who move on, pulling up roots from their homeland can be traumatic. It truly is not an easy decision to make, and today about 15% of those who leave their native country choose to return, finding that adjusting to a new society is too difficult.

The easiest transitions occur when the immigrants can find a community made up of people from their native home. They can keep a lot of their old customs while integrating the new country’s language, values and culture. Experience seems to indicate that to be happy they need to wholeheartedly try to assimilate the new ways and not begrudge the environment being different. Home is where the heart is! Home needs to be wherever we are! (more…)

federal-agency-swamped-by-green-card-applications.jpg

Immigration authorities have received about 300,000 applications for high-skilled-employment visas since July 1, federal officials said Friday, a deluge unleashed after the federal government first said it would not accept any applications for those visas during July and then reversed course.

Citizenship and Immigration Services, the federal agency, was still receiving applications for employment visas Friday, the last day of a special period it announced July 17 for immigrants with professional skills to file petitions for permanent residence visas, known as green cards. As a result, the total tally of applications received in the last six weeks was not available.

The agency admitted it was swamped by the applications it had already received, which was more than double the annual limit of 140,000 employment visas. (more…)
