The “visitor” visa is a nonimmigrant visa for persons desiring to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1) and for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2). As examples, if the purpose of your planned travel is recreational in nature, including tourism, amusement, visits with friends or relatives, rest, medical treatment, and activities of a fraternal, social, or service nature, then a vistor visa (B-2) would be the appropriate type of visa for your travel.

As additional examples, if the purpose for your planned travel is to consult with business associates, travel for a scientific, educational, professional or business convention, or conference on specific dates, settle an estate, or negotiate a contract, then a business (B-1) visitor visa would be the appropriate type of visa for your travel.

Foreign travelers who are citizens from certain eligible countries, may also be able to visit the U.S. without a visa on the Visa Waiver Program. (more…)

The Ancient Order of Hibernians in New York has come in favor of reciprocal U.S./Ireland visa deal.

Hopes for a bilateral deal, perhaps similar to one that exists between the U.S. and Australia, have risen in recent months as hopes for comprehensive immigration reform in Washington have fallen.

AOH New York State President Matt Nelligan, and Board Chairman of Immigration, Dan Dennehy, issued a joint statement this week saying that the AOH New York State Board applauded the efforts of Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern in addressing the issue of immigration between the United States and Ireland during his recent visit to the U.S.

The Hibernian statement said that in meetings with top U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Minister Ahern expressed his desire to pursue a reciprocal allotment of visas for the people of Ireland and the U.S. Ahern, the statement said, pointed out that many of the undocumented Irish are here as a direct result of the past conflict and political situation in the North and with the development of an all-island economy, Ireland would benefit from a reciprocal deal with the US. fire.jpg In the spirit of blazing one’s own trail, we spoke with trend forecasters to determine which careers will be the most popular in the coming year. Gerald Celente, Publisher of the Trends Journal, along with the team at TrendsResearch.com provided us with details on which industries are growing the fastest.

Armed with statistics on industry competitiveness and job availability supplied by Monster.com, this year’s list has been compiled with the forward-thinking attitude of the Fast Company reader and the professions listed.

Each job listing contains and explanation of the position, why it’s hot for 2007, and suggestions for further topical reading from Fast Company articles from the past year. Some positions have a tech focus, some are design based, but they all share common ground: It takes a creative soul with an endless amount of determination and innovation to thrive in these fields. This year, Fast Company salutes its readers who brave the challenge of the “what if” with the list of top professions destined for success in 2007. Experience Designer: These talented individuals work in the retail industry, creating the essence and aura of a store. Experience designers go beyond the look of a place, creating a unique experience in which shoppers can immerse themselves. From cellular boutiques to the American Girl doll store on New York’s Fifth Avenue, the shops created by an experience designer are often considered works of art; mini universes unto themselves. Experience designers are involved in every aspect of creation — from choosing accent colors on walls to slanting the windows in the right direction. The next time you go into a boutique and you feel as if you’ve just had an “experience” — you have, and someone went to a lot of trouble to make you feel at home. Researchers of cancer, Alzheimers, and the developers of prosthetics are the most coveted titles in the healthcare industry. With the aging baby boomer population, the need for cures and treatment plans is both paramount and profitable. Major developments aren’t only taking place in medicine, but also in the way doctors file medical records. Individuals with the know-how and creative juice to mix tech with medicine can expect seven figure salaries in the year ahead. Diversity Visa Lottery 2007 (DV-2007) Results

The Kentucky Consular Center in Williamsburg, Kentucky has registered and notified the winners of the DV-2007 diversity lottery. The diversity lottery was conducted under the terms of section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act and makes available *50,000 permanent resident visas annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.

Approximately 82,000 applicants have been registered and notified and may now make an application for an immigrant visa. Since it is likely that some of the first *50,000 persons registered will not pursue their cases to visa issuance, this larger figure should insure that all DV-2007 numbers will be used during fiscal year 2007.

Applicants registered for the DV-2007 program were selected at random from over 5.5 million qualified entries received during the 60-day application period that ran from 12:00 AM on October 5, 2005, until midnight, December 4, 2005. The visas have been apportioned among six geographic regions with a maximum of seven percent available to persons born in any single country. During the visa interview, principal applicants must provide proof of a high school education or its equivalent, or show two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience within the past five years. Those selected will need to act on their immigrant visa applications quickly. Applicants should follow the instructions in their notification letter and must fully complete the information requested. albanian_immigrants.jpg It’s taken a little luck and a whole lot of hard work, but Arjan and Milda Osmani are living their very own version of the American dream.

The couple are Albanian immigrants who live in Crawfordsville. They came to the United States with their two young children in 1999 after being selected by lottery to be part of the U.S. Department of State National Visa Center’s DV-99 diversity immigrant program.

They received the first notification their names had been randomly selected for further consideration for the program on April 6, 1998.

In that first letter, the Osmanis were told they were not guaranteed a visa “because the number of applicants selected is greater than the number of visas available.” While 90,000 applicants had been chosen for further processing, the letter said, only 50,000 diversity visas were available worldwide.

The purpose of the DV lottery, according to visalaw.com, is to increase the diversity of immigrants coming to the U.S. Therefore, high admission states — including Canada and Mexico — are excluded from the lottery. Low admission states compete equally with other low admission states in the same region, and no single state may receive more than 7 percent of the allotted visas — which was 3,500 the year the Osmanis were selected. Arjan signed up for the lottery on a whim, he said. Registration for the lottery took place each October at the post office, Arjan said.

“We have a friend who won the lottery,” said Arjan, a dark-eyed man with a cheerful smile. “He come back to Albania talking (America) up.” (more…)

National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, is a time when students and others learn about the history of and contributions made by Hispanics in the United States. This year’s theme is Making a Positive Impact on American Society.

Latinos, in fact, have long been an active part of American society.

Today’s image of the Latino dispels the perception that all Hispanics are foreigners and new arrivals to America.

Along with the obvious impact Hispanics continue to make in population growth (more than 800 million nationwide), and their growing presence in politics, fashion, music, television and literature, the perception of Latinos as an elusive and undefined group has finally begun to fade before the eyes of the public and the media.

Corporate America is now embracing the hard facts that show Hispanic Americans dominating in the marketplace.

Carrying the strong social habits of American culture, the Hispanic consumer has drawn the attention of Madison Ave. with the commercial buying power of close to $1 trillion.

While many first-generation immigrant Hispanics work hard to become American citizens, the youthful, second- and third- generation Latinos have emerged as fluent English-speakers with one foot in mainstream America and the other in their Hispanic culture.

That’s why, for instance, the Hispanic American youth market has become the hottest target for marketers and advertisers. (more…)

WASHINGTON: Each year, the State Department holds a lottery – a computerised random drawing – to select the names of persons who may apply for one of the 50,000 visas made available through the Diversity Immigrant Visa programme. The lottery for the fiscal year 2009 programme (DV-2009) is from October 3-December 2, 2007.     Persons who register for the lottery should be aware that diversity visas are available only to persons who meet “simple but strict eligibility requirements,” according to the State Department.

The selection of a person’s name in the lottery does not automatically guarantee that a diversity visa will be issued. The lottery is just the first step in the visa application process. Those selected in the lottery who go on to apply for a diversity visa must meet certain education or work experience requirements: either a high school education or its equivalent, or two years of qualifying work experience. The requirements are outlined in the DV-2009 instructions. “If you cannot meet these requirements, you should NOT submit an entry to the DV programme,” according to the State Department’s September 25 announcement concerning the visa lottery.
