Cultures differ in how they communicate, how they use their time, and how they view themselves in terms of empowerment and decision making. These differences are likely to become apparent in business sessions with people from other countries. There has been considerable research done by anthropologists, psychologists and businesspeople on what these differences are and how we can learn to work effectively within other cultures, as will be described in this chapter.

The main variables we will discuss are selected from the research of Edward Hall, Florence Kluckhohn, F.L. Strodtbeck, and Geert Hofestede.

Many business people are not prepared for some of the basic differences that they will experience when working with other cultures. Both businesswomen and businessmen will experience many culturally differing styles, mannerisms, and behaviors, and women in particular frequently find themselves wondering whether certain behaviors they are observing are culturally related or are related specifically to their gender. It is important to understand that these differences do exist, to learn to identify these differences, and to develop strategies to cope with them. There are many dimensions of cultural differences, and many which are unique to each country. This chapter will summarize some of the more common cultural differences that you may encounter in business, including variations in: (more…)

To marry someone out of the country of origin one needs to have or get a visa. In plain simple words, visa means a permit or a pass to entry another country. People who can marry out of the country can be either locals or foreigner living or working in another country and religious officials. However, American diplomats and consular offices cannot perform marriages.

The K1 visa is applicable for fiancée. In clearer terms K-1 visa is a United States nonimmigrant visa benefiting fiancés and fiancées of US citizen petitioners

It has been said that those marriages which have been legally accepted and performed abroad, are also valid in the United States. The embassy or the information bureau of a tourist from another country is the best source of information about a marriage that has taken place in that country. (more…)

What is an accent? An accent is the carryover of sounds from the speaker’s original language to the second language. When we are infants we literally have the ability to speak any language in the world. We are all born with the necessary speech mechanisms and the capability to learn any language. We end up speaking the language that we do solely by reinforcement. The sounds a baby hears and the speech patterns he is exposed to are the ones that she develops.

Soon the baby gains the fine motor skill and control she needs to create sounds herself. The infant will begin by babbling and playing with sounds. Soon she is able to produce simple vowel/consonant combinations which maybe why mama and dada are often their first words, they can make the combination and the big reaction it elicits reinforces their efforts.

By 18 months she will be able to produce about 20 words that have meaning and understand around 50 words. Now babies of course have the ultimate immersion experience. In order to obtain any control over their environment they must learn the language and they are surrounded by the language almost 24 hours a day. (more…)

An illegal immigrant is eligible for an immigration bond if he or she has been arrested by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and has been issued a Warrant of Arrest. Immigration bonds are similar to other bail bonds as they too guarantee the appearance of an individual charged with a legal violation in court. The amount of a bond must be enough to ensure that the defendant will appear for all further immigration proceedings.

The alien would be considered for the bail bond only if eligible. The alien must demonstrate that such a release would not pose a danger to property or persons, and that he or she is likely to appear for any future proceedings to the satisfaction of the immigration officer.

A company’s bail bondsman can post the immigration bond only after the INS determines that the alien is eligible. However, an immigration bond can also be posted through a private company rather than the INS. The name and registration number of the alien and the name of the facility where the alien is being held must be provided. These basic requirements are similar to other types of bail bonds, including the annual premium payment paid to the bail agent. (more…)

Some families need to move abroad because of various reasons and one thing that these families need to worry about is their children’s education. They are often contented with the services of their old school and are not sure if the schools in their destination offer the same quality education. It is therefore very important to make your own research about the schools abroad.

Countries with expatriates of high proportion have several international schools that make use of British, American, and other systems. The schools follow the curriculum of the existing system and they also teach using the native language. International Baccalaureate is usually followed by the international schools since it is accepted by the different universities all over the world. You can find most international schools in major cities but you can also find boarding schools. International schools have a lot to offer to students like extra curricular activities as well as hobbies and interests. (more…)
