The residence requirements include the completion of a minimum period of four years and nine months before the date of applying and if the person already has a green card by way of marriage to a US citizen the time lapse is just two years and nine months. The five year general requirement has many exceptions. Continuous residence stipulated allows a time gap of a minimum of six months to one year absence time from the country.
