Getting a US Visa through the Diversity Visa 2011 lottery

The US Greencard lottery is an initiative by the Department of State to offer 50,000 US greencards to people in countries with low US immigration rates. Countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants in the last 5 years, are however not eligible. These include Jamaica, India, Pakistan, Canada, Colombia, and Peru among others.

The DV2011 lottery is the easiest way to become a part of the US populace, through a very random, but completely unbiased and impartial process. The best part is that it is a fairly simple process, unlike the usual hassles and complications one would expect to encounter in such a process. All you have to do is fill-in the online form between Friday, October 2, 2009 Noon Eastern Daylight Time (GMT-4) and Monday, November 30, 2009, noon Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5). (more…)

Diversity Visa 2010 lottery results

For the 102,800 applicants selected in the first stage of dv-2010 lottery, the much-coveted US Greencard will not just be a distant dream. Out of these applicants, 50K were selected for the visa interviews Those interested in being a part of the dv-2010 lottery had to submit an electronic form online, and out of the 13.6 million applicants, 102,800 eligible entries have been picked through a random, computer-generated lottery. However, not all selected applicants will get a visa after the interview process. That is the reason why the lottery picks more than the requisite in the first stage.

None of the selected applicants are informed by e-mail, but through letters (postal mail) only. The US greencard diversity applicants, who have not been selected in the lottery, do not receive any confirmation; only the selected are contacted by the Kentucky Consular center. Those who have not been selected are also free to apply again in the diversity visa lottery 2011. (more…)

At first glance, the U.S. green card lottery sounds like an exciting chance to make some cold, hard cash. However, this is no simple lottery that consists of scratching tickets or picking numbers. The Green Card Lottery, also known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, is run by the United States government. It makes approximately 55, 000 immigrant visas available to people of other countries that have low immigration rates to the United States.

An applicant who receives a Diversity Immigrant visa is allowed to permanently live and work in the United States. They may also bring their spouse and any unmarried children under the age of 21 along with them. When granted permanent residence through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, the cardholder can work at any job and/or start a business.

How it Works

The U.S. Government holds the U.S. Green Card Lottery each year, and randomly chooses about 110, 000 applicants from all qualifying entries. Each region’s entries are individually numbered when they reach the Kentucky Consular Center. At the end of the registration period, entries are randomly selected from each geographic region by a computer. Within each region, the first entry picked is the first case registered, the second entry is the second case registered, and so on. All entries from each geographic region have an equal chance of being randomly chosen.

Applying for a US Permanent Residency card (or Green Card) is an important step for immigrants seeking to live and work in the United States.

Green Cards are issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), who has set instructions and filing fees that must be followed stringently—otherwise, your application may be denied or delayed.

Below are some tips on how to avoid the most common mistakes that result in a Green Card application being delayed or denied.

A counsellor at the United States Embassy, Mr. Michael Evans has warned Ghanaians to desist from fraudulent marriages arranged to benefit from the Diversity Visa (DV) lottery programme.

Fraud marriages, he said, make it harder for legitimate people to get their visas.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, he said the US Embassy takes the issue of fraud very seriously and has made several arrests involving fraudulent marriages arranged to benefit from the DV programme.

“We work with the CID to identify and arrest those involved in perpetrating the fraud”, he said.

All marriages, he said, now undergo careful scrutiny because of the huge number of fraud marriages submitted during the application period. (more…)

Q. I won the green card lottery in 1998. My wife and I applied for permanent residence, but the USCIS never approved our case. Do I have a chance to get my residence based on that lottery win or should I just forget it? Though we were never called for an interview, we got the authorization for several years. Eventually the USCIS denied our request to renew our employment authorization.

Marcelo Santos, Sunnyside

A. It is extremely unlikely you can revive your old lottery case. When the U.S. Department of State picks a lottery winner for a particular year, the winner must get residence within that year.

If he doesn’t, he loses his right to residence based on that lottery win. That’s true regardless of whether it is the fault of the applicant or the government. The fiscal year for which you won began on Oct. 1, 1997, and ended Sept. 30, 1998. (more…)

Diversity Visa Lottery 2007 (DV-2007) Results

The Kentucky Consular Center in Williamsburg, Kentucky has registered and notified the winners of the DV-2007 diversity lottery. The diversity lottery was conducted under the terms of section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act and makes available *50,000 permanent resident visas annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.

Approximately 82,000 applicants have been registered and notified and may now make an application for an immigrant visa. Since it is likely that some of the first *50,000 persons registered will not pursue their cases to visa issuance, this larger figure should insure that all DV-2007 numbers will be used during fiscal year 2007.

Applicants registered for the DV-2007 program were selected at random from over 5.5 million qualified entries received during the 60-day application period that ran from 12:00 AM on October 5, 2005, until midnight, December 4, 2005. The visas have been apportioned among six geographic regions with a maximum of seven percent available to persons born in any single country. During the visa interview, principal applicants must provide proof of a high school education or its equivalent, or show two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience within the past five years. Those selected will need to act on their immigrant visa applications quickly. Applicants should follow the instructions in their notification letter and must fully complete the information requested. Washington — Applicants for the United States’ 2009 Diversity Visa Lottery (DV-2009) are encouraged to enter early in the two-month registration period because excessive demand might slow down the system as the deadline nears, according to the State Department.

The Diversity Visa Lottery registration period will be October 3 to December 2, 2007, the State Department announced September 25.

The Diversity Visa Lottery winners are selected in a computerized random drawing. Persons whose names are selected may apply for one of 50,000 Diversity Immigrant Visas made available each year. These visas are available only to persons from eligible countries with low immigration rates to the United States, according to the rules of the DV program.

Registration for the Diversity Visa Lottery is free. Persons seeking to enter the lottery must register online through the designated Web site (www.dvlottery.state.gov/), and digital photos must be submitted with the registration form. Paper entries will not be accepted.

The Department of State Kentucky Consular Center in Williamsburg, Kentucky, will notify the lottery winners by mail (NOT e-mail) between May 2008 and July 2008. The winners will be provided instructions on how to apply for DV-2009 visas, which will be issued between October 1, 2008, and September 30, 2009. (more…)
