niagara-falls.jpg
For years Niagara Falls has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States and Canada. Visitors from abroad and North America cannot seem to shake their desire to visit this dramatic aquatic spectacle. But why exactly? The falls are not particularly convenient to any major U.S. city (apologies to Buffalo), which means visitors to the US will need at least two days to fit in a visit to Niagara.
Furthermore besides the actual falls themselves, there is little in the way of cultural or natural points of interest in the area. That is unless you consider a visit to ‘Ripley’s Believe it or Not’ to be a cultural experience.

Finally, the climate in the Niagara region is rather daunting for much of the year. The area gets a lot of precipitation throughout the year and winter is definitely rugged in that region. (more…)

police-in-california-arrest-latino-laborers.jpg
Eight Latino laborers without proof of legal U.S. residency were arrested Friday morning in front of the Home Depot in Orange and taken to an immigration checkpoint, from which they could be deported.

Orange police said the men were soliciting work outside the store and were cited for violating a city law that prohibits it.

A police spokesman said the arrests were made at the request of Home Depot and its customers. Company spokeswoman Kathryn Gallagher said store officials did not call police and were unaware that arrests were to happen.

The arrests drew applause from opponents of illegal immigration and raised concerns among immigrant advocates. (more…)

spring-in-new-york.jpg
April marked the beginning of springtime in New York City.
The return of championship baseball to Yankee and Shea stadiums.
The parks and botanical gardens in every borough burst into bloom. Daffodils and azaleas crowd Central Park, tulips parade up Park Avenue’s center mall, and there are glorious flower shows such as Macys Flower Show, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Cherry Blossom Festival, and the Greater New York Orchid Show.

A little known fact: New York is Americas greenest city, based on percentage of total land comprised of parkland. (more…)

Massachusetts is a small state on the North-East of the Unites States. It’s 32 times smaller than Texas in area, but had played a very significant role in American history. It is this very place where the first settlers from Europe arrived in XVII century.
The name Massachusetts comes from the name of the Indian tribe Massachusett (“masa” – “big” and “wachusett” – “mountain”)/div>

In November 1620 English ship “Mayflower” arrived to this coast. There were only 106 people. They came here in the hope of the new life, but only the half of them had survived the first winter in their new home. (more…)

green_card_demonstration.jpg
On several occasions over the last few decades, Americans have debated what to do about illegal immigration. What’s different about this year’s debate is that it includes a lot of non-Americans. The surprise element has been a wave of huge demonstrations across the country by illegal immigrants themselves.

The sight of hundreds of thousands of protesters has clearly given the issue more prominence than it had before. It has also stimulated strong reactions. Some radio hosts and commentators have criticized demonstrators for brandishing flags from Mexico and for missing school to demonstrate. Others praise them for peacefully dramatizing the nation’s dependence on undocumented workers.

The marches may have also had an impact on Capitol Hill. In December, the House of Representatives passed a bill mandating a variety of strict enforcement measures, from building a 700-mile-long wall on the Mexican border to making it a felony to be in the United States illegally. Shortly after the first protests, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that was far more generous than the House proposal, dropping the criminal penalties and creating a guest-worker program to let some foreigners come and go legally.

Almost all of the state’s poorest residents will have to show proof of US citizenship to continue getting medical care by July 1, under a little-noticed federal law that could endanger coverage for many, as Massachusetts is trying to expand access to healthcare.

Born out of ongoing efforts in Washington to clamp down on illegal immigration, the new federal requirement compels anyone seeking Medicaid coverage to provide a birth certificate, a passport, or another form of identification in order to sign up for benefits or renew them.

No such proof is required now.

The requirement was tucked into the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which President Bush signed into law earlier this year.

The measure was part of an effort to limit the skyrocketing growth of federal entitlement programs. It has surfaced as Massachusetts begins to implement its sweeping healthcare plan, which aims to bring health coverage to almost all of the state’s uninsured, in part by enrolling those in Medicaid who are eligible but who have not signed up.
