With the recent nomination of Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court Justice, a plethora of cruel remarks have been sweeping through the talk shows and on-air statements; all in an effort to undermine her nomination. Most of these statements have been made by Republicans who have yet to learn what the word “respect” really means.

In a recent article entitled “Women’s Role in Society,” written by Lillian M. Varrassi, she made a valid point that throughout the centuries, women have been deemed second class by their counterparts. While her article is timely, it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is a double standard for men and women - a bias that continues to exist today.

While it is claimed we have made great strides in equality, this recent and outrageous behavior on the part of the Republican Party not only demeans the role of women in our society, but proliferates their views with wild abandon.

Where is it written that the Supreme Court justices should be relegated to a specific gender? Why shouldn’t the Supreme Court have a diverse background of justices who utilize their life experience along with constitutional law to make decisions that are fair and just?

G. Gordon Liddy, in a perverse statement about Sonia Sotomayor, referred to her “menstruation” as the reason for making some bad decisions. Rush Limbaugh called her a racist; another talk show host called her a “school marm,” and Karl Rove thought she should “withdraw her nomination.” All these men lack the one characteristic that makes them human - respect for women in general, and Sonia Sotomayor in particular.

It is no wonder, then, that the Republican Party is shrinking. They have no clear understanding of their constituents’ needs, nor do they appreciate a brilliant justice who will no doubt enhance the Supreme Court, not detract from it.

The Republicans have, since President Obama’s inauguration, become the party of “no.” Moreover, they have enlisted the aid of pundits whose only message is to attack anything the President does while, at the same time, issuing pronouncements and judgments that have no basis for such an attack.

They have systematically rendered Sonia Sotomayor incapable of serving on the Supreme Court - not because of her brilliant history as a judge, but because she is a Latino women. And they call her a racist!

The Republican pundits need a lesson in respect, and soon. The Grand Old Party has become a disgraceful reminder that we haven’t come as far as originally thought. If they were a billboard, the sign would read: Change is Unacceptable; Women: Know Thy Place; and Making Decisions While Menstruating Renders Those Decisions Null and Void!
