The rainbow nation becomes the first African country to host the prestigious football world cup which was first held in 1930 and won by Uruguay. Since then there have been 18 editions and seven nations have shared the victor’s podium between them. South America has been the traditional powerhouse from where “the beautiful game” has derived some of its most beautiful moments of play and the most inspiring players. 32 teams will vie for the famed trophy in this competition that spans one month – from June 11th to July 11th 2010. Brazil, the five-time champion starts as the perennial sentimental favorite, especially for those that can still remember the exploits of Pele, Garrincha, Zico, Plato, Mario Kempes and more recently Bebeto, Romario, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho. The first two matches of the day are South Africa vs Mexico and Uruguay vs France. It cannot get more mouth-watering than this, particularly the latter game where two-time champs can be trusted to display South American magic to counter Gallic flair. Mexico is a dangerous floater and along with Spain and Portugal could spring some big surprises. They come into the tournament with a win against Italy a few days back. The American football team is ranked a very respectable 14th in the world. Considering that the game is nowhere as big as baseball and rugby and has only recently caught the fancy of the people, this is a neat achievement. And to represent your nation in a world cup is always special. Landon Donovan, the striker from Los Angeles Galaxy club knows it only too well. He plays best when he is wearing the country colors. The country’s football history is not that old but it is illustrious. America, in fact, was one of the semi-finalists in the very first edition of the world cup.
