The history of football goes back a long time, more than 2000 years in fact. There is evidence of a similar game being played in China a long time ago. Ancient Greece and Rome can also lay claims to being the earliest proponents of the game. Today, football is the most popular sport by far. More countries play footy, soccer, futbal, or football as it is variously known, than any other sport. This is the single outstanding feature that makes the football world cup so special. It adds richness and flavor to its 80 years of history.

The Beautiful Game is perhaps the only sport that can truly lay claim to hosting a global meaningful World Cup in which the participation rivals that of the Olympic Games. Most other sports be they cricket or hockey have to choose from a limited pool of playing nations, but not so football.

The world cup of football is a mega event that is eagerly awaited; it is a matter of great prestige for any country to be given the honor of hosting the football world cup. The world cup is hosted under the aegis of FIFA. It was Jules Rimet, FIFA president in 1928, who first thought of bringing together the best national teams and holding matches to decide the world champions of football. Since the first cup in 1930 that was held in Uruguay and won by the host nation, there have been 19 editions to the FIFA world cup, including the one going on in South Africa. It was not held during a 12-year period due to the Second World War.

Over the years, each world cup has thrown up heroes, some more enduring than the others. There have been great moments of brilliance and ecstasy, those runs down the middle by Maradona in 1986, Pele’s moments of genius in the final against Sweden where his first goal in the final is considered one of the best ever scored in a world cup, the total football of Cryuff and the Dutch team of 74’, Puskas and his magnificent Magyars in 54’ when they went down to West Germany in the finals, and so many more. All these personal and collective efforts have a special place in the conscious of billions of sports lovers, to an extent that old timers can still recall with precision events that happened 60 years ago. For these football fanatics, yesterday is just a memory away. And this is the power of football. It inspires us to rise higher and gives us beautiful memories. And the best part of it all is that it is upon us once again. It is not for nothing that the football world cup is considered the most awaited single most magnificent sporting event of the world.

It is the ambition of every footballing nation to lift the football world cup, that beautiful gold trophy, one of the most recognized cups in the history of world sport. And yet, only seven countries have been sharing the cup between them since the inception of the game. Anyone with even a passing interest in the game knows that Brazil and football are synonymous with one another. The land of the Samba has an almost mystical connection with football. The effervescence that Brazil has brought to each and every world cup is keenly awaited. This time too they have Kaka and Ronaldinho under the coaching of Dunga; any world cup is potentially Brazil’s cup – after all they have won it a stupendous 5 times.

The world cup rules have seen some changes over the years, for example from the 2006 world cup onwards, the defending champion is not guaranteed an automatic berth; the host nation however qualifies automatically. So this year, we have South Africa playing in world cup matches by virtue of being hosts. Although they are not expected to go beyond the second round, it is a great thrill no doubt for their team to be there, sharing space with champion sides such as Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Italy.
