SAN DIEGO: Immigration officials began one of a series of ongoing fugitive sweeps in San Diego County on Monday, with 13 people arrested as of yesterday.

AdvertisementU.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are targeting individuals considered immigration fugitives or absconders and immigrants who have failed to comply with a deportation order or who have not shown up at a hearing.

Of the 13 arrested since the operation began, eight are Mexican nationals, two are from Guatemala, and the rest are nationals of Vietnam, Cambodia and El Salvador.

Twelve of the 13 arrested were targeted immigration fugitives, said agency spokeswoman Lauren Mack. A two-week operation in San Diego and Imperial counties in March yielded mostly collateral arrests, with 62 targeted immigration fugitives among the 359 people who were arrested.

The fugitive sweeps are part of a renewed federal focus on interior immigration enforcement. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has 52 fugitive operations teams working nationwide, up from 18 in 2005. By the end of this year, 75 teams are expected to be deployed.
