Green card holders should know a few tips to keep problems at a minimum when they arrive at a border or an international airport. For instance if you’ve spent a lot of time out of the country (say 6 months or longer) you may wind up facing a long question and answer session with immigration inspectors. It’s a given you do not want to lose your Green Card.

Here are some of the things you need to do to make sure things go smoothly. Make sure your card is not expired. You’d be surprised how many times this actually happens when life gets in the way and important deadlines are missed.

Along with the Green Card, you need to have a re-entry permit, a refugee travel document (this indicates your permanent residence) or at least produce temporary evidence of legal permanent residence. E.g. travel stamp

Interestingly enough you don’t need to produce a valid passport for re-entry. You will likely have one though since you have been travelling abroad. If you offer your passport it will have ARC and your “A” (alien) number written on the page along with the admission stamp.

Customs inspectors are looking for signs of you having abandoned your home (permanent residence). So they look for employment abroad, whether you have immediate family who aren’t permanent residents, if you arrive on a charter flight where other passengers are non-residents that have return flights, no fixed US address and prolonged and frequent absences from the US.

None of these things are necessarily solid indicators of there being a problem, but if you happen to have three out of five of the things they look for going on, you will likely be asked to produce other forms of identification - driver’s license etc.

In many cases its simple human error or forgetfulness that means your Green Card isn’t quite up to snuff. If you take time to make sure every thing is in order before traveling, you will avoid any potential problems when you arrive. If in doubt about what you need to prove, or have other problems with the entry process, consult with a competent immigration lawyer.
