I received an email this morning which is from a leading immigration publisher quoting an article on the Wall Street Journal A Wall Street Journal which points out that an infusion of innovators is even more needed in a recession.

Companies founded by immigrants include Yahoo, eBay and Google. Half of Silicon Valley start-ups were founded by immigrants, up from 25% a decade ago. Some 40% of patents in the U.S. are awarded to immigrants. A recent study by the Kauffman Foundation found that immigrants are 50% likelier to start businesses than natives. Immigrant-founded technology firms employ 450,000 workers in the US.

While acknowledging that the recession makes the political battle more difficult, President Obama plans to begin addressing the country’s immigration system this year, including looking for a path for illegal immigrants to become legal, a senior administration official said on Wednesday. Mr. Obama will frame the new effort — likely to rouse passions on all sides of the highly divisive issue — as “policy reform that controls immigration and makes it an orderly system,” said the official, Cecilia Muñoz, deputy assistant to the president and director of intergovernmental affairs in the White House.

Mr. Obama plans to speak publicly about the issue in May, administration officials said, and over the summer he will convene working groups, including lawmakers from both parties and a range of immigration groups, to begin discussing possible legislation for as early as this fall.

What Is Saint Patricks Day? Saint Patrick is a patron saint of Ireland. He is considered responsible for converting the Irish to Christianity. Saint Patricks Day (or St. Paddy’s Day or Paddy’s Day or, Americanized, Patty’s Day) is a feast day celebrating Saint Patrick, and takes place on 17th of March (the anniversary of his death in the fifth century).

In Jean-Paul Sarte’s play, No Exit, 3 people are locked in a room together forever. Eventually they figure out that they are in hell and this is their punishment. If being locked in a room with 2 other people is hell, what do you call it when the room is on fire and you can’t get out?

That’s what American writer Florence Lasser explored in her play, The Story of the ILGWU (International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union). One of the episodes includes the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911 when 146 mostly immigrant Jewish and Italian women workers were killed because the fire exits were locked. Some of them leaped to their deaths as the flames drew closer.

Sweet Chilli Sauce… Delicious, especially with sour cream and wedges. But apparently this delicious combination hasn’t caught on in America, so it’s hard to find. But on the extremely off chance that someone Googles “Where can I find sweet chilli sauce in Boston”, here ’tis.

Sweet chilli sauce can be found in the Asian “world” section at the Shaw’s next to the prudential center. (Sorry for the Americanization (sorry for that one too.)

Yes, they are important to our future! Many of tomorrow’s workers and business owners are the children of today’s immigrants. More than 40% of the growth of our labor force in the late 1990s was due to immigrants, and since immigration WILL continue, they are important to our future growth.

A concern is certainly that many of today’s Hispanic/Latino immigrants are
uneducated and unskilled: this could mean that their children will not fit into our
knowledge-based and high-tech economy.
